Plumbing Tech Tips

Extended Time Away

This checklist is to provide you with some helpful information when leaving your home for extended period of time. These suggestions are no guarantee that a problem may arise while you are gone.

  1. Locate Meter Room in your Building and/or your home. For a condominium, in the Meter Room locate the Main Shut Off Valve for your units Water (should be label by address). Turn shut off valve to the "Off" position. You also need to go into the furnace room of your home and turn the water shut off valve to the "Off" position.
  2. Turn the gas control valve on your water heater off. This is located at the face of the water heater. When you do you return you will need to relight your pilot light on the water heater. If you don't want to shut the gas off to the water heater you can turn the temperature dial to vacation.
  3. Make sure you maintain a temperature above 40 degrees in your unit. Even though the water is shut off, there is still a potential for existing water to freeze in the pipes.
  4. May want to leave a faucet open to relieve any pressure in the lines.
  5. Make sure if you live in a condominium complex, you contact your Association and let them know the dates you will be gone in case there is a need to get into your unit.
  6. When returning from your trip, you will need to turn your water back on from the meter room and in the furnace room of your unit. May want to let the water run in your unit for a couple of minutes to refresh the water.
